They aren't the same. The people might be the same, as people are people, but the beliefs are different. I think that comment was just as ignorant and insulting toward people with strong beliefs as her taking the book from her son. That said, I see your point. It's ridiculous that she should do such a thing, it's only fueling the hatred that should never have been there in the first place. There is no harm in understanding someone else's beliefs.
